Biography
Art guides, inspires and captures the imagination. It has the ability to soothe our thoughts and fuel our dreams. It has the power to stimulate our consciousness and invigorate our minds. It creates a unifying bond that often gives rise to a new perspective. – Marc André Jacques Fortier
Born in the Province of Québec, April 19, 1961, Fortier expresses his thoughts through a visual expression of his own. He inherited from a rather pragmatic notary and his mother an intellectual, writer and drama teacher—curiosity, character and the desire to outdo himself. Influenced by European and North American culture, theatrical comedy, German expressionism, Surrealism and the counterculture that is central to the Pop Art movement, he created his own unique style. Fortier’s art is figurative, evocative, energetic, positive and colorful, with a constant concern for esthetics. Playful, often ironic, authentic, this artist challenges appearance and certain human behaviors in society. Disciplined, methodical and passionate, this self-taught artist has been working with proven and durable mediums for more than 38 years. Today, some of the most important monumental sculptures in and around Montreal, Quebec, bear his signature.
