Alain Dahan

Biography

Alain Dahan relies on serendipity, craft, and intuition to navigate what might otherwise seem an uncertain path for a visual artist. Having worked in cinema and photography for over 20 years, Dahan discovered his distinctive visionary style in 2012 when he embraced digital photography as a creative, rather than strictly professional, medium. Building on his mastery of digital tools, his career as a photo-based visual artist progressed rapidly.

Dahan's first show at Montreal’s Gallery 203, Take 2.0, in 2012, featured a series of colorful digital prints inspired by the contrast between urban decay and new urban development.

His latest series, Naked Silver, continues to explore these themes of old and new. This body of work comprises a series of nude photographs inspired by Renoir and Rodin. By printing with black ink on metal, Dahan achieves a distinctly contemporary, strikingly luminous effect that feels almost holographic.

The project began as an homage to Dahan’s friend and mentor, Karl Phillip Duarte, who, before his passing, had been working on a book of nude photography. To honor Duarte’s legacy, Dahan embarked on his own journey of photographing nudes.

These innovative, futuristic prints were not his first take on the subject; the artist waited for the serendipitous “voice of inspiration” to guide him to a new medium. Grateful for the excitement the metal prints generated at the photo lab, Dahan knew his art had found an exhilarating new direction.

Dahan’s Naked Silver exhibition has traveled from Montreal’s Galerie 203 to Art Fusion Galleries in the Miami Wynwood Art District and is now back in Montreal.
